Where have all the cicadas gone, long time passing...
Apologies to Pete Seeger for the misquote.
Two days ago suddenly almost all of the cicadas in the trees near us have either vanished or just ceased to "sing" to one another. There's just one or two that occasionally chirrup, but it's now quiet all day. The weather hasn't changed appreciably, it's still very warm, in the low/mid 30's, so that doesn't seem to be the reason. A search through internet articles about cicadas hasn't given me any clues about their "singing" season. Do they know something about the season that we don't?

I've got a gaggle of them, shall I send them over? :)
OK, so cicadas don't come in a gaggle, but herd didn't sound correct either.
Oh dear, what can of worms have you opened Kat? How about a chirrup of cicadas, or maybe a twitter? I'm sure someone out there will find a really good collective noun for them. Some German friends were really fascinated last year by the wealth of collective nouns in English, and how if they didn't exist you could start creating your own.
Thanks for the offer of sending some cicadas, but, no thanks. The peace and quiet is wonderful. Now we can hear all the building work around us so much more clearly and the workers shouting at one another. Also, why is it that most Greeks when then use a mobile phone shout loudly enough that the other person could probably hear them without the phone?
I didnt realise anyone else had heard of Pete Seeger !!
Did you know his sister Peggy Seeger, married Ewan Macoll who was Kirsty Macolls father. !
I bet you didnt know that bit of trivia ...
